Aerospace At-a-Glance
The aerospace sector is one of the largest industries in the world, comprising five primary markets: military aircraft, missiles, space exploration, commercial airliners, and general aviation. This sector employs approximately 509,000 workers in scientific and technical roles and supports over 700,000 additional jobs in related fields. With a strong emphasis on research and development (R&D), about 25% of aerospace employees are engineers, scientists, and technicians. Additionally, aviation is one of the fastest-growing industries in the United States, experiencing an annual growth rate of at least 14%.
Momentive Technology Materials Enable Innovations in Aerospace
Boron nitride possesses excellent high-temperature stability and oxidation resistance, making it an ideal coating material for high-temperature components in rocket and aircraft gas turbine engines. It protects these parts from extreme temperatures and corrosive environments. Furthermore, boron nitride can be used as a reinforcing phase when combined with other materials to create high-performance composites. These composites are utilized to manufacture structural parts for aircraft and spacecraft, enhancing their strength, stiffness, and durability. Due to its lightweight, high-strength, and corrosion-resistant properties, boron nitride can be incorporated into lightweight composites. These materials find diverse applications in aerospace, such as in spacecraft structures, satellite components, and aircraft fuselages. Boron nitride also serves as a lubricant that can be applied to various friction and contact surfaces in the aerospace field, including engine parts, gears, and bearings. Its excellent lubricating properties and oxidation resistance allow it to maintain effective lubrication under extreme temperature and pressure conditions. Additionally, boron nitride can be used to manufacture radiation shielding materials to protect astronauts and spacecraft from radiation in space.
